National Day of Mourning
Today has been declared a National Day of Mourning in honor of our 41st President, George H. W. Bush, who passed away on November 30 at the age of 94. Federal offices including post offices, are closed today but our library, like many other public libraries, will be open regular hours, 12-6 p.m.

Attention Summer Readers!
Calling all kids! The library's Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing and it's not too late to join in. Kids of all ages may participate and can win prizes for reading three or more books at or near their reading level and recording the titles in their book logs. For the older kids, 100 pages equals one book. Summer Reading runs all summer long so stop by soon to enter!

The library's Summer Reading program starts today! Prizes will be awarded to the first 5 youth who sign up. The program runs from now until the end of August and children of any age can win prizes all summer long by meeting reading goals and recording books read in their reading log. Pageturners Meet May 14
The Pageturners book club meets the second Monday of each month. This month the meeting date will be May 14, and the book for discussion is "Hillbilly Elegy" by J.D. Vance. Copies of the book are available at the library.

Tax Deadline Extended
After problems with the IRS tax filing website on Tuesday, the tax filing deadline has been extended one more day, to the end of today, April 18. We do still have tax forms available and can help patrons download and print any specialized forms they may need, including extension forms. We are open until 6 p.m. this evening.

Tax Season
Tax filing deadline is fast approaching and while it may be expected that the date is April 15, this year it is actually Tuesday, April 17. When the 15th falls on a weekend the deadline is moved to the following Monday but Monday the 16th is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, so the deadline has moved to Tuesday. We still have tax forms available for any of you that still need to file so stop by and visit us soon!

Easter Egg Hunt Rescheduled
The annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Melvin Women's Club was rescheduled from last Saturday due to the snow and will be held at the same time, 11:00 a.m., at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Melvin this Saturday, March 31, instead.

Pageturners/Women's Club
Next Monday, March 12, at 7:00 p.m., the Pageturners book club will meet at community hall on Main Street to present the program for the Melvin Women's Club. This has become a wonderful annual event enjoyed by all! The book for discussion will be The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, a Pulitzer Prize winning historical fiction novel.

Read Across America
Today is "Read Across America Day" the event held annually on beloved author Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2. Its purpose is to celebrate reading, motivate young people to read and create awareness of the importance of reading in every child's life. The library has a wonderful collection of Dr. Seuss books as well as a host of other books for every reading level and interest so stop by and visit the library and remember to celebrate reading!

Great Backyard Bird Count
This weekend, February 16-19 is the annual Great Backyard Bird Count and you and your family can participate by counting the birds in your locality and entering the number online. It's as simple as that. The library has numerous bird identification books to help you with your count. Check out the GBBC website here: birdcount.org

The library will remain closed today due to inclement winter weather. The decision on whether or not to have the Pageturners book club meeting this evening, or to reschedule it, will be made shortly and all book club members will be contacted with the decision.

Winter Weather
Melvin Public Library may close early or remain closed during severe winter weather. Please phone first 388-2421 if there is any doubt that the library is open. All items are automatically renewed and there are no late fees should the library have a weather related closing. If the weather is bad, stay home and stay safe!
