By now everyone should have received a pink postcard from the library inviting all area residents to participate in the Show Your Love for the Library fundraising drive. If you did not receive a card and would like to participate, phone 388-2421 for more information.

So many have responded with generous donations and we’d like to thank you all! Donations have been received from Marty & JoAnn Althouse, Dave & Ruth Moore, Rhonda Day-Hornstein, Lloyd & Ruby Allen, Al & Ginny Celeschi, Mary Lou Hill, Sharon Kacheris, Roger Arends and Jean Watterson; and more are arriving each day!

Jean Thackeray, Diane Doyle and Esther Ficken have all recently made donations of books and books on tape to the library and we appreciate their thoughtfulness!

The library has four new books by popular author Wanda Brunstetter that comprise The Brides of Lancaster County series. The titles are A Merry Heart, Looking for a Miracle, Plain & Fancy and The Hope Chest. Also new is Janet Evanovich’s Plum Lovin’, a Stephanie Plum Between-the-Numbers novel.

Show Your Love for the Library

Just in time for Valentine's Day the library is having a fundraising drive called Show Your Love for the Library! Area residents who appreciate the library can show their love with a donation made to Melvin Public Library, 102 S Center Street, PO Box 129, Melvin IL 60952.

Pink postcards have been sent to all local addresses in Melvin and Peach Orchard Township. If you did not receive a postcard and would like to participate in the fundraising drive phone 217-388-2421 for more details!

Winter Hours


With a winter snowstorm in the forecast it's a good time to remind folks that the library may close early or remain closed during severe winter weather. Phone first, 388-2421. Of course there are no late fees if this should happen!

The library has received a donation from Ed & Kathy Eagleson in memory of Lucille Swearingen. The Melvin Women’s Club has made a donation to the library in appreciation for the February 1 program provided by the library book club, the Pageturners.

The new collection of rotating videos has arrived with 40 titles to choose from including About Schmidt, Anger Management, Cold Mountain, Crush, Finding Nemo, A History of Violence, The Incredibles, Just Friends, Just Like Heaven, Ladder 49, Madagascar, Polar Express, Prime, Racing Stripes, Ray, A State of Mind, Under the Tuscan Sun and We Were Soldiers.

The Internet link for the federal government has changed from firstgov.gov to usa.gov. This easier to remember link provides access to many government services and the public can find information about grants and benefits, education, the law, health and nutrition, public safety, science and technology, transportation, the environment, agriculture and much more.

Thanks to Don and Cheryl Kurtenbach for their donation to the library in memory of Lucille Swearingen. Other recent donations to the library have been received from Stan Swearingen and Mike and Linda Moody.

New books now in are Stalemate by Iris Johansen, Shadow Dance by Julie Garwood, Hundred-Dollar Baby by Robert B. Parker, The Hamiltons by Catherine Cookson and Still Life with Crows by Douglas Preston. Friend-of-the-Library Jean Thackeray has donated a P.D. James novel, The Murder Room; you may have seen this on TV recently on the PBS series Mystery.

The library book club The Pageturners will be presenting the program for the February 1 Melvin Woman’s Club meeting to be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Methodist Church. The group will be sharing their views of the Haven Kimmel book She Got Up Off the Couch and talking about the joys of reading; it should be lots of fun!
