Holiday Closing

The library will be open regular hours 12-5 on Friday, December 29 and 10-2 on Saturday, December 30; but will be closed on Monday, January 1, 2018, to celebrate the New Year!

Tax Season

Is it too soon to think about taxes?  The IRS has provided a website to help with early preparation.  Check out www.IRS.gov/getready for what you need to know and what you need to do to be ready for the upcoming tax season.

Remember, Melvin Library provides all basic state and federal income tax forms and can print any specialized form needed.

December Pageturners

The Pageturners book club holiday get-together will be Monday, December 11, at Murdock's in Loda and the group will meet at 5:30 p.m. for supper.

New Books

Check out the holiday books recently added to the library's collection including Christmas Blessings by Katherine Spencer, The Noel Diary by Richard Paul Evans, Christmas with Southern Living 2017, First Snow by Nora Roberts and who wouldn't want to read a book with such a charming cover as this; Noelle by Greg Kincaid.

Thanksgiving Holiday Hours

The library will be closed on Thursday, November 23 for Thanksgiving but will be open regular hours on Friday, 12 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Have a great holiday weekend!

Veterrans Day

Melvin Public Library will be open regular hours on Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11.  Happy Veterans Day to all service members and their families!

November Pageturners

The next Pageturners meeting will be Monday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is "Gone Missing" by Linda Castillo.  We have copies of this book available at the library if anyone wishes to pick one up and read it for the Monday meeting.

Columbus Day

 

The library is open today, Columbus Day, regular hours, 12-6 p.m.  And the Pageturners book club will meet this evening at 7 p.m. with Brian Crawford, author of this month's book selection Memphis Legend, joining the group for the monthly book discussion.

Pageturners

The Pageturners Book Club is hosting an author visit on Monday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the library at 102 S. Center Street in Melvin.  Local author Brian Crawford will be joining the group to talk about his book Memphis Legend.

New Highway Signs

Have you seen the new library highway signs posted on U.S. Route #54 at the edge of town pointing north on Center Street?  Thanks to the Illinois Department of Transportation these informational signs are placed on the highway at no cost to the agency and make our library easy to locate from either direction.

Pageturners

The library book discussion group, The Pageturners, meet next Monday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book selection is "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult.

Summer Reading

The library's Summer Reading Challenge for youth ended September 2 with a total of 33 area children participating.  Congratulations to the top five readers; Tucker Pabian, Jason Stover, Landon Bodine, Aleigha Goff, and to the number one reader, Ansleigh Cornell, who personally read 91 books over the summer!  The top  five winners receive prizes for their achievements.

Free Driving Tests

Melvin Public Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. This new service includes free tests specifically based on Illinois’s DMV materials.

The program serves many groups, including teens, those with disabilities, seniors who need to take a renewal exam, as well as patrons at every other stage of life.

New Sign

Check out the library's new sign over the front door.  It was created and installed by Signs & Designs of Paxton, Illinois.

Pageturners

The Pageturners book club meets this evening, Monday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is "Shooter" by local author Kelsey Crowley who will be joining the group's round robin discussion!

Eclpse Glasses

Special eclipse glasses will be needed to safely view the Monday, August 21 event and the library is giving them away free!  The glasses have been provided by a grant from the Space Science Institute.  Stop by or call the library at 388-2421 to claim your pair today!

Local Author Visit

At the Pageturner book club meeting next Monday evening, August 14, local author Kelsey Crowley will join the group and talk about her book "Shooter" which is the first book in The Returner series.

 

We have lots of questions for Kelsey who was 14 when she recently wrote this book such as how does such a young person write a book and get published?

 

It should be an interesting and enjoyable evening!

Eclipse

On Monday August 21, 2017 we will be able to view a near total solar eclipse, something that hasn't happened in this area for many years!

And the library has eclipse viewing glasses to hand out to members of the community at no charge.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge for youth continues through July and August at the library.  Young people can earn prizes like puzzles, crafts, toys, school and art supplies as well as books, for reading and recording titles in their book log.  It's easy to sign up and kids can join all summer long so stop by the library for more details.

Pageturners Book Club

The Pageturners Book Club meets this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is "The Boston Girl" by Anita Diamant who is also the author of the popular book "The Red Tent."  Newcomers to the group are always welcome!

Independence Day

Melvin Library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th in honor of Independence Day.  Have a Happy 4th!

Ford County Fair

Beginning next Sunday, June 25th and running through Saturday, July 1st it's the Ford County Fair week at the fairgrounds here in Melvin, Illinois.  There are rides and attractions, a queen pageant, talent show, demo derby and tractor pull plus lots of food and music.  See the fair website at http://fordcountyfair.org/.

Over the past year we have worked on a number of library repair projects and upgrades and our newest project began today.  We are having our front doors painted a wonderful new color so stop by and take a look!  We'll try to post pictures in the next few days.

Tax Filing Deadline

Remenber, the tax filing deadline was extended this year and will now fall tomorrow, on April 18.

National Library Week 2017

National Library Week runs April 9 through April 16 in 2017 but we are starting today with our popular book giveaway!  Each member of the public can choose 4 free items from our book sale area EACH DAY during National Library Week.  We have adult and youth books, fiction and non-fiction, as well as magazines, DVDs and VHS tapes free for the taking.  So please stop by and visit the library this week and see all the many services your local library has to offer and take advantage of our free book giveaway!

Tax Filing Date Extended in 2017

April 15 is the traditional tax filing deadline but this year the date has moved to Tuesday, April 18 due to the 15th falling on a Saturday and Monday being Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.  The library has all basic state and federal tax forms available and we can help print any specialized income tax forms you may need!

New Books

New books recently added to the library's collection include The Black Book by James Patterson, The Devil's Triangle by Catherine Coulter, Treasured Grace by Tracie Peterson, Still Life by Dani Petry, Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth and The Whole Town's Talking by Fannie Flagg.

April Pageturners

The Pageturner book for the April 10 meeting is “Truly, Madly, Guilty” by Liane Moriarty and plenty of copies, including large print, are now available at the library!

New Movies

Around the middle of each month the library receives a new shipment of movies on DVD that remain in our library until the next rotation and these new movies have now arrived.  There are 95 different titles in this collection and they include action, adventure, thrillers, romance, comedies and plenty of children's movies also!

Holiday Books

Check out the library's large collection of children's holiday books.  Currently on display are books celebrating St. Patrick's Day (only 2 days away!) and Easter.  Also watch for displays for Spring, Memorial Day, July 4, Fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas, among other holiday seasons.

Pageturners @ Woman's Club

The next meeting of the Pageturners Book Club will be Monday, March 13 and the book for discussion is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.  This meeting will also be hosted by the Melvin Women's Club and will be held at the regular time, 7:00 p.m., but will be at the Melvin Community Hall on Main Street instead of at the library.

Open Presidents Day

The library will be open regular hours on Monday, February 20, Presidents Day.

Tax Forms

It's that time of the year, tax time!  All basic state and federal income tax forms are available at the library and other forms can be printed at no charge. Members of the public may also use the library's public access computer to file their taxes online.

New movies are in at Melvin Library--patrons may check out 4 at a time and they circulate for 1 week.
