Holiday Closing
The library will be open regular hours 12-5 on Friday, December 29 and 10-2 on Saturday, December 30; but will be closed on Monday, January 1, 2018, to celebrate the New Year!

Is it too soon to think about taxes? The IRS has provided a website to help with early preparation. Check out www.IRS.gov/getready for what you need to know and what you need to do to be ready for the upcoming tax season.

New Highway Signs
Have you seen the new library highway signs posted on U.S. Route #54 at the edge of town pointing north on Center Street? Thanks to the Illinois Department of Transportation these informational signs are placed on the highway at no cost to the agency and make our library easy to locate from either direction.

Summer Reading
The library's Summer Reading Challenge for youth ended September 2 with a total of 33 area children participating. Congratulations to the top five readers; Tucker Pabian, Jason Stover, Landon Bodine, Aleigha Goff, and to the number one reader, Ansleigh Cornell, who personally read 91 books over the summer! The top five winners receive prizes for their achievements.

Free Driving Tests
Melvin Public Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. This new service includes free tests specifically based on Illinois’s DMV materials.
The program serves many groups, including teens, those with disabilities, seniors who need to take a renewal exam, as well as patrons at every other stage of life.

Eclpse Glasses
Special eclipse glasses will be needed to safely view the Monday, August 21 event and the library is giving them away free! The glasses have been provided by a grant from the Space Science Institute. Stop by or call the library at 388-2421 to claim your pair today!
Local Author Visit
At the Pageturner book club meeting next Monday evening, August 14, local author Kelsey Crowley will join the group and talk about her book "Shooter" which is the first book in The Returner series.
We have lots of questions for Kelsey who was 14 when she recently wrote this book such as how does such a young person write a book and get published?
It should be an interesting and enjoyable evening!

Eclipse
On Monday August 21, 2017 we will be able to view a near total solar eclipse, something that hasn't happened in this area for many years!
And the library has eclipse viewing glasses to hand out to members of the community at no charge.

Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge for youth continues through July and August at the library. Young people can earn prizes like puzzles, crafts, toys, school and art supplies as well as books, for reading and recording titles in their book log. It's easy to sign up and kids can join all summer long so stop by the library for more details.

Ford County Fair
Beginning next Sunday, June 25th and running through Saturday, July 1st it's the Ford County Fair week at the fairgrounds here in Melvin, Illinois. There are rides and attractions, a queen pageant, talent show, demo derby and tractor pull plus lots of food and music. See the fair website at http://fordcountyfair.org/.

National Library Week 2017
National Library Week runs April 9 through April 16 in 2017 but we are starting today with our popular book giveaway! Each member of the public can choose 4 free items from our book sale area EACH DAY during National Library Week. We have adult and youth books, fiction and non-fiction, as well as magazines, DVDs and VHS tapes free for the taking. Tax Filing Date Extended in 2017
April 15 is the traditional tax filing deadline but this year the date has moved to Tuesday, April 18 due to the 15th falling on a Saturday and Monday being Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. The library has all basic state and federal tax forms available and we can help print any specialized income tax forms you may need!

New Movies
Around the middle of each month the library receives a new shipment of movies on DVD that remain in our library until the next rotation and these new movies have now arrived. There are 95 different titles in this collection and they include action, adventure, thrillers, romance, comedies and plenty of children's movies also!

Pageturners @ Woman's Club
The next meeting of the Pageturners Book Club will be Monday, March 13 and the book for discussion is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. This meeting will also be hosted by the Melvin Women's Club and will be held at the regular time, 7:00 p.m., but will be at the Melvin Community Hall on Main Street instead of at the library.

It's that time of the year, tax time! All basic state and federal income tax forms are available at the library and other forms can be printed at no charge. Members of the public may also use the library's public access computer to file their taxes online.
