As all of the surrounding school districts have cancelled classes for the second day and icy conditions prevail, the library will remain closed today.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Winter Weather Closing

The library may close early or remain closed during severe winter weather.  Be sure to call ahead 388-2421 if in doubt.  No late fees are charged if this occurs.

Pageturner Holiday Party

 The Pageturners will hold their holiday party next Monday, December 12,  at 6:30 p.m. at Community Hall on Main Street to enjoy the movie “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”  Please bring your own drink and a snack to share with the group.

The group will read “We Never Asked for Wings” by Vanessa Diffenbaugh for the January 9, 2017 meeting and books are arriving at the library for anyone who wants to start reading!

Pageturners Meet Tonight

The Pageturners Book Club will meet this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is “The Silent Wife” by A.S.A. Harrison. 

Veterans Day

The library will be open regular hours, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2016.

Election Day

Election day is coming up, next Tuesday, November 8, and the polling place for Melvin and Peach Orchard Township is the Melvin Community Hall at 108 East Main Street, the polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Happy Halloween!

Trick or Treat hours are 5 to 7 p.m. this evening and don't forget to stop by the library for a treat!  Afterwards, at 7:05 p.m., be sure to attend the Halloween party at the hall on Main Street sponsored by the Melvin Women's Club where there will be a costume parade plus prizes and treats for all!

Pageturners Celebrate 18 Years!

A large group of readers first met at Melvin Library in October 1998 to see if there was enough interest in the area to form a book club, and there was.  On Monday evening, October 10, 2016, the Pageturners Book Club celebrated  18 years in existence! 

Cake and punch were enjoyed as the group remembered highlights of the first 18 years including their first meetings, holiday celebrations and several road trips.  Members have come and gone over the years but this core group is a dedicated bunch and we are proud they are associated with our library!

Open Columbus Day

Melvin Public Library will be open regular hours, 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. next Monday, October 10, Columbus Day.

October Pageturner Meeting

The next Pageturner Book Club meeting will be on Monday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion will be Big Girl Panties by Stephanie Evanovich.  Plenty of copies are available (in regular and large print) at the library.

The Pageturner Book Club will meet this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand.  The selection for the October 10 meeting is unknown at this time but will be decided by the end of tonight's meeting.

Summer Reading

Congratulations to Tucker Pabian for reading the most books in the library's Summer Reading Challenge which ended August 31.  Tucker read 114 books!  That's 14 more than he read last summer.  Tucker truly is a super reader!

August Pageturners

Cooling Center

Melvin Public Library, along with 3 other Ford County libraries, will be a cooling center for the community during open hours for the next few days of excessive heat.  Please call the library if you have any questions at 388-2421.  Hours are posted at the bottom of this page.  Stay cool!

Due to a shortage of available copies of the previous selection, the August Pageturner book has been changed to The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and copies should begin arriving in the library early next week!

Thanks to Monical's Pizza Restaurants for donating free pizza coupons to the library's Summer Reading program!  Each young person who reads books and wins a prize at the library will also qualify for a coupon for a free 8" pizza at your local Monical's.  Stop by the library for more information

Ford County Fair

It's Fair week in Melvin as the Ford County Fair runs June 19-25 on the east side of town.  Tonight's entertainment is a rodeo with a talent show, musical acts, tractor pull and demolition derby scheduled for later in the week.

July Pageturners

In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume is the selection for the next Pageturners Book Club meeting to be held at 7:00 p.m. at the library on Monday, July 11.  This historical novel set in the idealistic time period of the 1950s mixes a fictional family saga with true events.

Summer Reading

In the first week of the Summer Reading Challenge we have had 14 young people sign up to win prizes for reading books!

This program runs all summer long so youth may sign up and participate at any time from now through August.

National Library Week

We are celebrating National Library Week, April 10-16, 2016 with a free book give-away.  Any member of the public can stop by the library and choose 4 free items from the book sale each day during the week.

The library book club also meets this evening, April 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is "The Astronaut Wives Club" by Lily Koppel.  The Pageturners, as the book club is known, first organized in October 1998 and has been going strong for over 17 years!

Fundraising Dinner April 2

Please come out and support the library at a fundraising dinner on Saturday, April 2 at Community Hall on Main Street in Melvin.  Pulled pork bbq sandwichs, chips, drinks and pie will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the music for the evening will be Dennis Stroughmatt starting at 7:00 p.m.

Smartphone Program

Just a reminder that the Smartphone Program that was rescheduled last month will be held this Wednesday, March 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the library and representative Steven Goodwin of Illinois Valley Cellular will be here to share tips and tricks to help us get the most out of a smartphone.  Phone the library at 388-2421 with any questions.

Esther Ficken Memorial Donation

The library wishes to thank Judy Engelstad, Janet Ficken and Linda Ashley and their families for the generous donation in memory of their mother Esther Ficken. 

Esther was one of the founding members of the library in 1934, one of the founding members of the popular Pageturners Book Club in 1998 and also served as a library trustee for many years.  She was a great Friend of the Library and she is missed!

Just a reminder that the January library board meeting has been moved to Wednesday, January 27 at 10:45 a.m. at the library.

Library Open Monday

The library will be open Monday, January 18, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, during regular hours of noon to six p.m. so if you have the day off from work or school, be sure to stop and visit!
