Holiday Closings

The library will be closed Friday, December 25 and Friday, January 1st to celebrate the holidays.  Merry Christmas to all our library patrons and friends!

January Pageturner Book

The book selection for the January 11 Pageturner meeting is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and copies are now available at the library in regular and large print. The Pageturner Book Club is open to one and all and new members are always welcome!

Holiday Party Change

Just a reminder that the Pageturners' Book Club holiday party that was scheduled for today has been moved to tomorrow, Tuesday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Hall on Main Street.  Note the start time is one half hour early than normal meeting time.

Historical Fiction

Enjoy more historical fiction from Jennifer Chiaverini, popular author of Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker.  Just in are The Spymistress, also set during the Civil War era; Mrs. Lincoln's Rival and the newest release, Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule.

November Book Selection

The book selection for the November 9 Pageturner Book Club meeting is The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty.  The library has plenty of copies available for check out in both regular and large print.

Pageturners/Woman's Club

Just a reminder--The library's book club, The Pageturners, will meet tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Melvin Community Hall on Main Street to provide the program for the Melvin Woman's Club meeting.  Hope to see you all later!

Open Columbus Day

Melvin Public Library will be open regular hours, 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, Columbus Day.  Stop by and say hello!

Summer Reading Winner

Congratulations to Tucker Pabian for reading the most books in this year's Summer Reading Challenge for youth!  Tucker read 100 books over the summer and for his tremendous participation he has won a personal copy of the Pokémon Visual Companion.  Great job Tucker!

Hey kids!  Summer Reading ends today--come and get your prizes! 

The Summer Reading Challenge wraps up on Monday, August 31, so for any youth who still has books out, there is still time to finish and return them and record them in their book logs and win one more prize before summer ends!

Pageturner Books

For any Pageturners who were unable to attend last night's book club meeting, the upcoming book order has been changed.  For the September 14 meeting the club will discuss The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck and for the October 12 meeting the book for discussion will be Pegasus by Danielle Steel.

The Melvin Public Library book club meets this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the library and the book for discussion is Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan.

Summer Reading Bonus

The library's Summer Reading Challenge continues through August and as an added bonus each week that a participant reads 3 or more books at or near their reading level and wins a prize they may also choose a bonus book to add to their own library!

It's also not too late to sign up and participate in the  reading challenge, stop by the library for more details.

Pageturner Book

The book for discussion at the next Pageturner book club meeting on August 10 is Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness and copies are now available for pickup at the library.  Newcomers to the group are always welcome!

No Delivery Today!

After speaking with library system headquarters we are sorry to report there will be no van delivery today!  They have promised to make an extra stop tomorrow rather than wait for Friday's delivery.

Holiday Closing

The library will be open regular hours on Friday, July 3, from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will be closed all day Saturday, July 4, to celebrate the holiday.

Summer Reading

The Summer Reading Challenge for youth continues throughout the months of July and August.  Children of all ages can sign up and participate at any time by reading books, recording them in the book logs supplied by the library and then choosing their own prize.  There are lots of wonderful new books in the collection for the kids to read!

Titanic Display

Thanks to Miss Lily Breeden for the loan of her poster "Events of the Titanic," the focal point of our Titanic display and check out the youth books Titanic Crossing, Exploring the Titanic, Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic and On Board the Titanic which are also on display.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge for kids begins next Wednesday, June 3 and runs throughout the summer.  Young patrons can earn prizes each week for reading books and recording them in a book log.  Stop by the library and sign up anytime!

Pageturners

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan is the next selection for the library's book club and will be the topic of discussion at the next Pageturner meeting at 7:00 p.m. on June 8.  Plenty of copies are now available at the library and newcomers are always welcome to attend meetings.

New Book

There is a lot of buzz surrounding the new book The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and the library has added a copy to our collection.  Many compare it to another recent hit, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  Like that book, this one will keep you wondering what happened all the way to the end!

Book Club Recommendations

Reading Group Choices is a wonderful website for book recommendations whether you participate in a book club or not!  One of the books currently featured is the new title One Plus One by Jojo Moyes, author of our book club's May selection "Me Before You."  Check it out!

The book for the April 13 Pageturner meeting is Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline and there are plenty of copies available at the library, including several in large print.

Early Closing

Due to the ongoing power outage and therefore lack of light and heat, the library has closed early. Welcome to Illinois in winter!

March Pageturner Selection

February Book Club

The Pageturners have chosen Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot by Bill O'Reilly as the selection for the February 9 library book club meeting and copies are now available for pickup.  Large print copies are also available.
