Due to the winter weather advisory that is in effect and the extremely cold conditions, the library will remain closed today, January 29, and tomorrow, January 30.

The library is having a delayed opening today due to the icy conditions.  If conditions improve the library may open later this afternoon.  It's always best to phone first, 217-388-2421, if in doubt!

Today looks like a repeat of last Saturday, with the addition of the windy conditions which are expected to last throughout the afternoon.  The area remains under a winter storm warning until 3:00 p.m. so due to these conditions the library will be closed today.  Stay safe and warm and think of spring!

The library may close early or remain closed during severe winter weather.  Be sure to phone first!  1-217-388-2421.  The prediction is for several inches of snow to fall tonight through tomorrow so unless this weather front makes a sudden turn you may expect that the library will be closed tomorrow, Saturday, January 12!

 

National Day of Mourning

Today has been declared a National Day of Mourning in honor of our 41st President, George H. W. Bush, who passed away on November 30 at the age of 94.  Federal offices including post offices, are closed today but our library, like many other public libraries, will be open regular hours, 12-6 p.m.

The Melvin Public Library book club The Pageturners will next meet on Monday evening, September 10, at 7:00 p.m. at the library to discuss the book The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown.

Attention Summer Readers!

Calling all kids!  The library's Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing and it's not too late to join in.  Kids of all ages may participate and can win prizes for reading three or more books at or near their reading level and recording the titles in their book logs.  For the older kids, 100 pages equals one book.  Summer Reading runs all summer long so stop by soon to enter!

Summer Reading

The library's Summer Reading program starts today!  Prizes will be awarded to the first 5 youth who sign up.  The program runs from now until the end of August and children of any age can win prizes all summer long by meeting reading goals and recording books read in their reading log.  Stop by the library for more information and to sign up!

On May 22, PBS will premiere "The Great American Read," a show that will feature the joy and pleasure books can provide based on 100 best-loved books.  How many of the books on the list have you read?  Go to the website and take the quiz at PBS.
